A Week in the Life of an Iconic Construction Project Manager: Pride, Purpose & Possibility

When people ask what a “typical week” looks like for a construction project manager, I usually smile, because the truth is, no two weeks are ever quite the same.

But that unpredictability is exactly what makes this role so rewarding.

Balancing multiple projects, collaborating with diverse teams, and turning plans into places is a responsibility I take great pride in.

Every week, I’m reminded of the purpose behind what we do and the possibility of what these spaces will become.

Monday: Rolling into the Airport

My week usually begins with a pre-dawn drive to the airport, coffee in hand and a site schedule ready to go.

My main project, a major infrastructure development, brings all the moving parts of project management into sharp focus.

From coordinating with contractors to walking the site with engineers and operational teams, Mondays set the tone for the week: fast-paced, detailed, and collaborative.

There’s a buzz around airport projects unlike any other.

You feel the scale, the complexity, and the impact. It’s impossible not to feel proud knowing you’re contributing to something millions of people will experience.

Tuesday: Keeping Momentum on Site

Another day on site at the airport usually follows.

It’s a mix of design reviews, progress checks, health and safety walks, and troubleshooting whatever unexpected challenges arrive (and there are always a few).

Communication is constant, whether with stakeholders, suppliers, or specialists solving technical puzzles.

By the time I leave, I’ve usually clocked thousands of steps, but I also leave with a clear plan for the next phase – purpose in motion.

Wednesday: Into London for the Restaurant Fitout

Mid-week shifts gears.

I swap the car for the train and head into London to lead the fitout of a restaurant that forms part of a nationwide rollout programme.

Compared to the airport, the environment is tighter, faster, and more commercially driven.

Decisions need to be sharp, and coordination between designers, trades, and landlords is critical.

Watching a bare shell transform into a finished customer-ready space is one of the most satisfying parts of the job.

It’s the moment possibility becomes reality.

Thursday: The Construction Project Manager's Balancing Act

Depending on the week, Thursday is either back to the airport or back into London.

These days are about ensuring continuity across all projects; aligning programmes, tracking budgets, and making sure the teams have what they need to keep things progressing smoothly.

It’s a balance of strategy and hands-on problem-solving.

Friday:  Office Day in Wokingham

Fridays are my constant: a full day in our Wokingham office.

It’s here that I catch up on the quieter but essential side of project management; emails, reporting, planning, financials, and coordination with the broader Iconic team.

It’s a welcome chance to pause, reflect, and prepare for the week ahead.

There’s real pride in seeing how the work on site connects back to the work in the office. It all fits together.

A Week That Builds Something Bigger

Being a construction project manager means living at the intersection of people, progress, and possibility.

It’s about seeing challenges as opportunities, plans as promises, and every completed milestone as a shared achievement.

From airports to restaurants, site cabins to boardrooms, trains to car parks, no week is ever the same – but every week moves us forward.

And that’s exactly why I love what I do.
