What Inspired Me to Pursue a Career in Construction Project Management?
When I was exploring career paths, I sought something that aligned with my skills, provided continuous development opportunities, and offered transferable skills. Project management checked all these boxes. Initially, I hadn't considered a career in construction, despite my enjoyment of DIY projects. However, when I came across Iconic, I was immediately drawn in, and this ultimately led me to a fulfilling role in the construction industry.

My Career Journey So Far
I’ve been with Iconic for a year and a half, progressing from assisting on small projects to leading them. During this time, I’ve created new franchisee design and process guides, developed process guides for a large international developer, led fit-out projects for an international franchise, and worked as an assistant contract administrator for a small-scale property developer.
A Project I’m Particularly Proud Of Managing
Every project comes with its unique challenges and rewards. Some projects have been particularly fascinating to work on due to the complexity involved and the strong collaboration within the team. Others have been more challenging, requiring me to develop new skills, manage difficult contractors, and navigate brand-driven changes during construction. Each has contributed significantly to my growth as a project manager.
Essential Skills for Success in Construction Project Management
Organisation – Keeping track of various project elements simultaneously.
Communication – Ensuring clear, concise exchanges between clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
Assertiveness – Knowing when to take a firm stance to keep projects on track.
Handling On-Site Challenges and Surprises
Surprises are inevitable in construction. My approach is to first assess whether immediate action is required or if a more considered approach is best. If action is needed, I identify necessary steps and communicate them effectively. Personally, I do find these surprises stressful, but I’ve learned that problem-solving is often the best remedy for stress. I’m currently exploring better stress-management techniques to improve my resilience.

A Typical Day as a Project Manager
Each day varies depending on the project stage and client needs. However, my daily tasks often include:
Responding to emails and attending meetings with clients and suppliers
Preparing for meetings and documenting minutes
Managing project reporting, cost analysis, design reviews, change control, valuations, programme tracking, and responding to RFIs
My Favourite Part of the Construction Process
I find the start of a project the most rewarding phase. Morale is high, relationships are still forming, and the biggest challenges have yet to emerge.
Ensuring Projects Stay on Schedule and Within Budget
Tracking contractor progress against the project programme is key to ensuring timelines are met, although this depends on the contractor’s competency. For budget control, I follow a strict change control process that requires client approval before confirming any changes. Since changes are often unavoidable, a project contingency is typically set aside as a percentage of the overall budget.
A Memorable Lesson I’ve Learned
Assertiveness is crucial. My natural tendency isn’t to be overly dominant but, as a project manager, I’ve learned when to be firm to drive project success.
Managing Relationships with Clients, Contractors, and Team Members
I strive to communicate professionally and fairly, nurturing positive relationships with all parties. However, I acknowledge that there’s always more to learn!
Staying Updated with Industry Trends
While studying, I rely on university resources, as they incorporate real-world practices, up-to-date regulations, and legislation into their materials.
One Thing People Should Know About Construction Project Management
Many people underestimate the complexity of construction projects—the regulations, intricacies, and numerous unseen elements that go into making a project successful.

The finished result. Construction project management is uniquely rewarding in that the outcome is tangible and visible—I love seeing the final product of a completed project.

Balancing Work and Personal Life
Time management and prioritisation are key. Work and personal life are both important to me, so I ensure I balance them effectively.

My ultimate goal is to build my own house (I already have a Pinterest board full of ideas!).
My Favourite Building
I loved exploring the Angkor Wat temples—they were magical, despite the heat!

Hobbies and Interests Outside of Work

Alternative Career Path
It’s hard to say, but likely something related to a personal passion.
Best Advice I’ve Ever Received
Rejection is redirection.
The Future of the Construction Industry
I believe the industry is evolving to improve safety and regulations. While technology adoption is increasing, there’s still room for greater innovation and integration.
